Sumiyoshi Taisha Wakami Water Ceremony & New Year's Festival

Wishing for the prosperity of the nation and the happiness of its people, as well as a bountiful harvest
The Wakami Water Ceremony is a ritual where the priest personally draws young water from a sacred well and offers it in a bamboo tube to the gods. Young water is believed to cleanse evil spirits and represents rejuvenation. The New Year's Festival is a religious event held at the time of the first sunrise of the year, praying for the prosperity of the nation and the happiness of its people, as well as a bountiful harvest. It is conducted at all shrines (associated shrines and subsidiary shrines) within the precincts, starting from the main shrine. Water is considered the source of life, and the water drawn at the beginning of the year is deemed very sacred. The water from the sacred well is only drawn during the Wakami Water Ceremony and the rice planting ceremony.
