Sumiyoshi Taisha Tōka Shinji

A graceful Shinto ritual held in the New Year
The Tōka Shinji is an ancient New Year event that was once held at the imperial court. With a young plum branch in hand, Ebisu calls out "fukuro mochi," and Daikoku, who has put small rice cakes into a bag, responds with "ōtomoyo," as they approach each other. Afterwards, Daikoku presents small rice cakes in front of the deity while chanting "hi, fu, mi, yo goto," and concludes with three shouts of "Banzai Gaku." Following this, the sacred dance of the white dancers and Kumano dance is offered by the kagura performers.
