Utsunomiya Fura-san Shrine Daidai Kagura (May)

Lively sounds fill the shrine precincts
A performance offering kagura that has continued since the mid-Edo period. It belongs to the Edo lineage known as the Kanda school (originating from Wakayama in Asakusa), and at the shrine, it is referred to as the Miyabi-ryu daidai kagura. It is offered every year on the 28th of January, May, and September. In an era with few entertainment options, kagura was one of the pleasures for people, and it is said that men, women, and children filled the shrine precincts. Today, it is preserved by the Kagura Preservation Association as a traditional folk performing art.
