Akasaki Festival

A sacred ritual tradition inherited since the Azuchi-Momoyama period
The sacred rituals of the 'Akasaki Festival' held at the Akasaki Shrine's Yamasaki Stage (a nationally designated important tangible folk cultural asset) in Fukagawa, Nagato City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, began around the year 1596 (the first year of Keicho) when an epidemic affected horses and cattle. Prayers were made at the Akasaki Shrine, which enshrines the guardian deity of agriculture, and these wishes were granted. To express gratitude for this divine favor, performances such as musical dances and Yumoto Nanjou dancing are offered.
