Autumn Exhibition "19th Century Woodblock Prints"

Autumn Exhibition "19th Century Woodblock Prints"

Exploring 19th Century Publishing Culture through Japanese Books and Ukiyo-e

Sake Museum (Hakushika Memorial Sake Brewery Museum)

9/13(Sat)~11/24(Mon) 10:00~17:00

The 19th century in Japan was a time of significant cultural and political change, including the vibrant Edo culture during the Bunka and Bunsei eras and the tumultuous Bakumatsu and Meiji Restoration periods. This era also saw the prolific production of Japanese books and ukiyo-e prints. A variety of works were published, including popular novels for the common people known as 'kusazoshi' and humorous books. Nishiki-e, a multi-colored woodblock print that emerged in the mid-18th century, continued to be popular throughout the 19th century. This exhibition will showcase the publishing culture of the time through Japanese books and ukiyo-e prints, which were most actively produced during the 19th century. ■ Notes Museum talks will be held on September 14 (Sun) and October 26 (Sun).
