Karatoyama Shinto Sumo

Karatoyama Shinto Sumo

Unique Sumo Tradition in Hakui

Karatoyama (Shinto Sumo Matches) Hakui Shrine (Sumo Festival, Appointment Ceremony, White Cloth Offering Ceremony, etc.)

9/23(Tue)~ 17:30~

It is said that the initiation of the Karatoyama Shinto Sumo, which competes in a two-match bout with 'no water, no salt, no hold,' began as a way to pay respects to the virtue of Iwatsukuwake no Mikoto by holding a sumo match on the deity's memorial day, 9/25, to comfort the divine spirit. The matches progress from the front bow to the middle bow, culminating in the final match known as the inner bow, where the Ozeki is decided. After the decisive bout, the two Ozeki from Kamiyama and Shimoyama rush to the worship hall of Hakui Shrine by riding on the shoulders of their fellow wrestlers. At Hakui Shrine, various ceremonies such as the Offering Festival, Sumo Festival, Appointment Ceremony for the Chief Referee, and White Cloth Offering Ceremony are conducted.
