Hofu Tenmangu Grand Procession (Naked Boy Festival)

A festival to convey the "news of innocence" to Sugawara no Michizane. At 6 PM, when the doors at the front of the worship hall open, hundreds of naked boys rush in all at once, and with the shout of "brother wasshoi," the precincts heat up instantly. As it shakes the ground, a 500 kg sacred palanquin slides down the large stone stairs, and the sight of about 5,000 naked boys dancing wildly is nothing short of magnificent. The procession of the deity travels to Katsumauura, where the Hamadono Shindai ceremony is held, before returning to Hofu Tenmangu.
