The Todai-ji Betsuin Amida Temple is an ancient temple built in the 3rd year of the Bunji era (1187) by the monk Shōjōbō Jigen, who traveled west to Suō Province for the reconstruction of Todai-ji, praying for the peace of the current reign of Emperor Go-Shirakawa. The treasure hall on the premises houses a number of important cultural properties including the national treasure, the iron pagoda, as well as precious statues and ancient documents. The temple grounds are home to over 4,000 hydrangea plants of about 80 varieties, making it famous as a hydrangea temple, but the autumn leaves are also worth seeing.
