The autumn foliage in the Shimoda area of Sanjo City is best seen around Yagigahana, Hakakoshiyama, Kasa-hori Dam, and Otani Dam. It is believed that this area emerged from the sea about 2 million years ago, and as a result of erosion and analysis, the central part of an underwater lava dome was exposed, forming sheer cliffs—a valuable example of a typical underwater lava dome. The location where the central part is largely exposed is rare even in the country. It has also been depicted in travel literature from the Edo period and has long been known as a scenic spot.

About 40 minutes from Hokuriku Expressway "Sanjo Tsubame IC"

Take the bus bound for "Yagigahana Onsen" from JR Higashi Sanjo Station, and get off at "Yagigahana Onsen" after about 50 minutes, then walk for about 10 minutes.
