Mount Kurikoma

Late Sep~Mid-Oct

Mount Kurikoma, at an elevation of 1627.4m, straddles the three prefectures of Iwate, Akita, and Miyagi. It is also called Sukawadake on the Iwate side. From spring to summer, fresh green beech trees, summer alpine plants, and autumn foliage attract many Sukawa fans. Especially in autumn, the vibrant colors of nature, including maple, rowan, and poison ivy, draw crowds and traffic jams seeking the plenty of negative ions in the air. Additionally, the diverse landscapes featuring volcanic scenery, canyons, lakes, and wetlands are a major attraction of the Sukawa Highlands.
