Kwantung Army: Unilateral March to Manchurian Domination and Collapse

Readin’ Writin’ BOOK STORE

9/20(Sat) 19:00~21:00

After the Russo-Japanese War, Japan acquired interests in Manchuria and Mongolia, such as Kwantung Province and the South Manchuria Railway. In June 1928, under Prime Minister Tanaka Giichi, an attempt was made to compromise between the North and South by delegating responsibility for China to Chiang Kai-shek and for the Three Eastern Provinces to Zhang Zuolin. However, Kōmoto Daisaku, a senior staff officer of the Kwantung Army, blew up Zhang Zuolin, who was retreating from Beijing to Fengtian, along with his train, aiming for a change of government in the Three Eastern Provinces. This analysis explores how such unilateral actions by the Kwantung Army were produced, considering seven backgrounds such as civil-military relations and internal military conditions.
