Ninokusa Suwa Shrine Annual Festival

Ninokusa Suwa Shrine Annual Festival

A rare village festival of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism

Ninokusa Suwa Shrine

9/19(Fri)

9/20(Sat)

The Suwa Shrine's annual festival is the most lively autumn festival in the Ninokusa area, where people give thanks to the gods for the year's harvest. The deities are Takeminakata no Mikoto, the child of Okuninushi no Mikoto. The wild portable shrine departs from the shrine on the evening of the 19th, parades through Kamizono Bridge, Abara, and Yokomachi, and stays overnight at the Otabidama-den. At noon on the 20th, the lion dance is performed in front of the portable shrine to the rhythm of flutes and drums, captivating people with its vigorous and colorful movements. Once this dance concludes, the wild portable shrine parades through Shimomura, Tōenji, and Kamimura, returning to the shrine around 7 PM to conclude the festival.
