Utsunomiya Castle Festival

The parade is spectacular!
Started in 1996, this festival is designed to help people learn about the history of Utsunomiya. The main event is a historical parade modeled after the scene when the 46th lord of Utsunomiya, Tadaaki Toda, entered the castle in Utsunomiya on his way to pay a visit to Nikko as a representative of the shogun. A large number of citizens dressed in matching happi coats, traditional straw sandals, and carrying tools parade through the city center of Utsunomiya.
