(c) Shima City Tourism Association, scenes from past events

A festival boasting over 300 years of tradition

Around Namikiri Fishing Port and Daiou Town Namikiri District

The festival is held based on the legend that the villagers scared away the giant Dandarabocchi, who was wreaking havoc in the village, by making a large waraji (straw sandal) the size of a tatami mat. After the children of the local community participate in the waraji pulling ritual, the waraji carried by young people is set afloat in the sea, praying for maritime safety and abundant catches. It is designated as an intangible folk cultural asset of the prefecture as "Namikiri's Waraji Hiki".
