Permanent Exhibition at Shimonoseki City East Koen Memorial Hall: Fierce Battle at Kokuraguchi

In June of the 2nd year of Keio (1866), the shogunate navy opened fire towards the Kamoguchi and Oshima areas, marking the beginning of the Boshin War. The Choshu domain army engaged in fierce battles with the shogunate forces at Kamoguchi, Geishu, Sekishu, and Kokuraguchi. In this battle, Shinsaku Takasugi, as the chief naval officer, collaborated with Yamagata Aritomo, the commander of the Kiheitai, to get involved in the battle at Kokuraguchi. This exhibition introduces the fierce fighting at Kokuraguchi that Shinsaku and the Kiheitai soldiers experienced.
