Cormorant Fishing on the Nagara River in Gifu

Cormorant fishing is a traditional fishing method where a cormorant trainer uses trained cormorants to catch fish. The cormorant fishing on the Gifu Nagara River has been protected by powerful leaders like Oda Nobunaga and has continued for over 1,300 years. In the pitch-black darkness, the bonfire reflects on the river's surface, and the cormorant trainers, dressed in traditional attire, manipulate the cormorants to chase after sweetfish, inviting spectators into a mystical world. Reservations for the cormorant fishing viewing boat can be made through the website. Bringing drinks or food on board the viewing boat allows visitors to enjoy dining in an elegant atmosphere.

No event will be held if cormorant fishing viewing cannot be conducted due to breaks (October 6) or high water levels. The time of the event varies depending on the date of boarding and the course.

Viewing from the riverbank is free; boarding the viewing boat is paid. The fee for the shared boat is 3,500 yen for adults (reduced to 3,200 yen if departing on weekdays at 19:15) and 1,800 yen for children.

15 minutes by Gifu Bus towards Nagara Bridge from JR Gifu Station or Meitetsu Gifu Station, get off at 'Nagarabashi Minami - Kawaramachi' and walk for 1 minute.
