Bonko Henko Festival

Bonko Henko Sakueimon no Nasubiya--i!
This festival held at Matsuo Shrine in Hiramatsu features children parading through the village while creating symbols of both genders, offering them to the raging deity of Matsuo Shrine, and performing fire prevention prayers, making it a somewhat unique festival. It is said that the shrine was completely burned down about 600 years ago and was rebuilt, only to be burned down again. It is believed that this festival began when it was rebuilt a second time. The cheerful festival is filled with joyful shouts of "Bonko, Henko, Sakueimon no Nasubiya--i!" The term "Bonko" refers to the sacred Shinto straw ring.
