Kawakanjo

A Fantastical Festival of Izu
This traditional event is held every year on the evening of August 1 to calm the water spirit of the Kano River, which was known as the 'abaregawa' (raging river), to protect the village from floods, and to honor those who have died in water-related accidents. A bamboo frame about 3 meters square is filled with wheat straw to create a raft about 1 meter thick, and torches measuring 5-6 meters in length are set up. The raft is transported to an area near the Kanomiguchi Shrine and lit with fire, while about ten young men manipulate it, chanting 'U, U, Uwahai.' Children on the Kamijima Bridge respond and the torches are carried downstream with the chanting until they burn out.
