The printing technology established in the Edo period enabled large-scale printing, reprints, the addition of illustrations, and multicolor printing, allowing for diverse expressions in early modern literature. While culture flourished, the Edo period also saw strict publishing controls, leading to incidents where not only popular authors were punished but also bookshops involved in publishing. There is a complex historical background surrounding publishing during this time.
