Yoshiwara's Lanterns
A heroic fire festival passed down in Maizuru City
During the mid-Edo period, it is said that a fire festival began to appease the anger of the sea god when jellyfish swarmed in large numbers. The god fire is lit from Enryuji, which enshrines Atago Gongen in a fish-shaped lantern, and it is then erected in the river to spin around. It is registered as an intangible folk cultural asset of Kyoto Prefecture.
