Misaki Shrine Fire Festival

Ancestor Worship Fire Festival
The flames of the torches burn brightly as the sounds of drums and bells echo in the darkness. This grand festival features torches, measuring up to 2 meters tall, created by each household, which are lit and paraded to Misaki Shrine by 40 young men in traditional costume known as Aonjo, who carry drums. A massive bonfire, approximately 15 meters tall, is ignited in the shrine grounds, creating flames that reach several dozen meters high. It is said that this festival, which has continued since the Edo period, began as a prayer for the safety of villagers punished during a dispute over land with the village across the river, and to offer solace to the spirits.
