Sushi Cutting Festival

Humorous, Shimoshikawa Shrine's Grand Festival
It is said that the origin of the "Sushi Cutting Ritual" comes from when the deity Toyokuiirihiko no Mikoto crossed Lake Biwa and the villagers presented him with salted crucian carp caught in Lake Biwa. During the ritual, two young men perform the preparation of funazushi in the traditional manner. The supporting role is played by two experienced seniors known as "Ita Naoshi," who humorously wipe their sweat, bringing laughter from the audience. Following this, offerings such as the "Kanko Dance," which has been designated an Intangible Cultural Asset of the country, are presented.
