Nakajima Gion Matsuri

A historic festival passed down for about 150 years
The Nakajima Gion Matsuri is a historic festival that prays for health, family safety, and bountiful harvests. The 'Great Snake Mountain' from Higashijyo Town is said to have started based on the legend of Susanoo no Mikoto, who defeated the Yamata no Orochi, enshrined at Hakken Shrine. Various mountains appear in front of the shrine, and around 7 PM, the Great Snake Mountain begins to move with the pull of the handlers, ringing bells and drums, while walking through the town of Nakajima, scorching the night sky with the fire spouted by the great snake.
