Kobashi Spirit Boat
A Bon event to see off the spirits of ancestors
The spirit boat ceremony is held every year on August 15 in the Kobashi area of Maizuru City. On the day before, local residents prepare a spirit boat made of bamboo and straw, offering incense and offerings on the boat. Once the offerings are loaded, the adults all work together to launch the boat from the coast, pulling it out to sea with a fishing boat and submerging it somewhere between Kankanjima and the sea (although it is not submerged now). It is a traditional event to send the spirits of the village far out to sea. It is designated as a registered intangible folk cultural asset by Kyoto Prefecture and as a city-designated intangible folk cultural asset.
