Soseki Sampo Memorial Museum ≪Regular Exhibition≫ Thematic Display: Soseki and Animals

Natsume Soseki is not just about cats!
In the first editions of Natsume Soseki's works, animals appear in various places such as covers, illustrations, and spines. In particular, Goyo Hashiguchi, who did much of the book design for Soseki's works, used many living creatures as part of the decorative design. This exhibition gathers and introduces animals that only reveal themselves when the book is opened, and small creatures that are easily overlooked at first glance. We will also explore the "cat" and "dog" that were kept in the Natsume household.
