Nagara River Festival - Ayu Memorial Service

An event that announces summer on the Nagara River
This annual festival is held on July 16 to prevent water accidents in the Nagara River and to memorialize the ayu (sweetfish) used in cormorant fishing. It used to be said that it was okay to play in the river after this festival ended. After the ayu memorial service held by the cormorant masters at Shinmei Shrine, lantern boats shaped like pagodas and torii gates are operated. After the cormorant fishing ends (around 20:30), fireworks will be launched.
