Jouya's Yagataibayashi
A traditional fire festival raising torches into the night sky
A traditional event passed down with the legend of the great serpent extermination from over 400 years ago. A tall torch about 16m high is set up in the square of the shrine, and a small torch is thrown into a central inverted cone-shaped bundle of ogara to ignite it. Intangible folk cultural asset of Kyoto Prefecture.
