In Japan, there is a genre called 'bijin-ga' (pictures of beautiful women). It is said to have started with ukiyo-e from the Edo period, and the 'bijin-dai' (portrait of beautiful women) painted by Kitagawa Utamaro became a huge boom. With the introduction of Western culture during the Meiji period, bijin-ga also changed, depicting beautiful women with distinct facial features and rich expressions. This exhibition showcases bijin-ga from the flourishing Edo period ukiyo-e to modern Japanese paintings, reflecting on the transformations of the women depicted in the art.
