Dōjō-ji Eshiki

The oldest temple in Wakayama Prefecture, Dōjō-ji
The annual festival of the Kannon deity is called 'Eshiki'. In conjunction with this event, a procession that reenacts the story of Anchin and Kiyohime is held. The procession, led by a great serpent, crosses the Hidaka River, parades through the town, and arrives at the entrance of Dōjō-ji, swiftly climbs the temple's stone steps, and circles around the main hall. Finally, it reenacts the scene of wrapping around the bell, breathing fire from its mouth, and burning the bell to ashes.
