In the Edo period, makeup was governed by many rules depending on status, class, age, and occupation. Significant life stages such as adulthood, marriage, and childbirth marked the 'first time makeup' was performed. This time, we will focus particularly on 'shaved eyebrows and a round chignon,' which symbolize married women, exploring the social meanings of makeup, as well as the thoughts, anxieties, and hesitations that accompany the 'first makeup' encountered in life.
