Kanogahara Insect-Tow Dance

Over 200 years of insect-tow events
The insect-tow dance in Kanogahara, held annually on July 20 to pray for a bountiful harvest, is one of the few remaining examples in the country that preserves ancient forms. It was designated as a prefectural intangible folk cultural property in May 1967. On the day of the festival, young men dressed in yukata and with red sashes adorned with flower hats take the lead, centered around a horse-riding straw doll, starting from Miho Ryo Shrine. They march in time to the unique insect-tow song, performing dances throughout the town to pray for the expulsion of harmful insects.
