Exhibition "The Movement of Confucianism in the Hikone Domain: New Learning in the 18th Century"

New Acceptance of Confucianism Leading to the Establishment of Domain Schools
In the 18th century Hikone Domain, new Confucianism introduced by scholars such as the Kyoto Confucian scholar Wakabayashi Kyosai (1679–1732), who was active in Tamiya-shuku, and Hikone domain samurai Nomura Tokusai (1717–84), who interacted with Edo Confucian scholars, spread among the samurai and heightened the academic momentum that eventually led to the establishment of domain schools. This exhibition introduces the state of Confucianism acceptance in mid-Edo period Hikone.
