Oyamazumi Shrine Rice Planting Festival

Ancient ritual for harvest prayer
This festival is held annually on the 5th day of the 5th month of the lunar calendar. Sixteen young maidens selected from thirteen districts on the island, dressed in pure white garments with red sashes and arm and leg protectors, perform rice planting. Additionally, a unique wrestling match (one-person sumo) is dedicated, where Ichiriki Mountain engages in a contest with the invisible spirit of rice. This one-person sumo is currently designated as an intangible folk cultural asset of Ehime Prefecture.
