Published starting in 1833, the "Fifty-Three Stations of the Tōkaidō" (commonly known as the Hoeidō edition of the Tōkaidō) depicts the post towns and landscapes encountered along the journey, along with the travelers and the people living there. This series, full of travel sentiment, became a huge hit, and Hiroshige joined the ranks of popular ukiyo-e artists. From then on, the "Tōkaidō" became synonymous with Hiroshige, who created more than 20 series throughout his lifetime. This exhibition selects one piece from various series for each post town, delivering the journey from Nihonbashi to Kyoto.
