It is said to have started as a way to mourn the people who died in the great famine of the mid-Edo period by sending out boats made of straw to the riverbank. On the 15th, about 500 dancers perform the citizens' bon odori around the yakatabune, and on the 16th, the yakatabune launch takes place, showcasing powerful clashes against a backdrop of beautiful fireworks.
