Gima Shiryodo Sumo Tournament

A traditional event held every year on the 25th day of the 6th month of the lunar calendar. Strong men from all over the island gather to compete in Okinawa Sumo (Okinawa Zumou). Kumejima is famous for its Okinawa Sumo, with island-wide tournaments held five times a year. Unlike Japanese Sumo, Okinawa Sumo starts from a standing position and victory is achieved by throwing the opponent down and having their back touch the ground. The powerful and dynamic matches of the men are impressive. Since registration is on the day of the event, those confident in their strength should give it a try!
