Minatohashira Shrine Sponsored Baby Sumo Entrance

The traditional festival of Minatohashira Shrine takes place the day before the Osato Hachiman Shrine Autumn Festival. A boy baby born within the year enters the sumo ring. Around their waist, they wear colorful mawashi embroidered with a shiko name that plays on their own name, adorned with valiant tigers and hawks, and tightly tied a red and white checkered hachimaki on their head, completing the look of a cute little sumo wrestler. When they enter the ring and the referee raises their winning name high, it is a prayer for them to grow up big, strong, and robust like a true wrestler.
