2025 Nagato City Tsuki Kujira Festival

A festival that recreates the magnificent scenes of whaling.
The Tsuki (かよい) area of Aoshima in Nagato City has a bay-shaped topography where whales are likely to get lost, and it flourished as a base for traditional whaling using spears and nets during the Edo period. The 'Tsuki Kujira Festival' is an event that recreates such traditional whaling. Those in red fundoshi (loincloths) called 'Whale Group' pursue boats resembling whales with traditional hand-rowed Japanese boats, thrusting spears and climbing aboard to deliver the final blow. The traditional 'Whale Song' imbued with feelings of mourning for the whales is also performed.
