Aoba Festival

A grand celebration of the birthday of the founder, Kobo Daishi
On the second Sunday of June, the Koyasan Aoba Festival is held to celebrate the birth of the Great Master, attended by the townspeople. It's a festival celebrated by the entire Koyasan community, with a floral procession taking place in the afternoon. Various groups from all over Japan participate in the parade with dances and taiko drumming along the main street. Spontaneous participation on the day is most welcome. The eve of the Aoba Festival features night stalls, and the 'Hodota Parade,' organized by the Young Entrepreneurs Association, where beautifully crafted nebuta lanterns illuminate the night town.
