Yaegaki Shrine Gion Festival

The sight of portable shrines and music troupes lined up is stunning
A festival held every year on August 4th and 5th. It has a long history, having continued since Genroku 10 (1697), with portable shrines and music troupes coming from 10 neighborhoods around the Yaegaki Shrine. The unique call of "anyaa doshita" and the coordinated portable shrine processions are truly impressive. Spectators bucket cold water on the portable shrines, allowing them to feel a sense of unity with the bearers, which is also a charm. On the night of the 4th, there is a rare female-only portable shrine procession, further enhancing the festival's excitement.
