The Yaisaka Shrine (Gion Shrine) in Senzaki, Nagato City, which prospered as a center for fishing and commerce, has a traditional festival that has been held since the Edo period. It takes place annually for six days in late July, with portable shrines (mikoshi) and floats (dashi) appearing on the first and last days. The mikoshi is moved from Yaisaka Shrine, located on the south side of Senzaki Street, to Suzaki Shrine (commonly known as Old Gion) near the northern end on the first day and returns to Yaisaka Shrine on the last day. Local children perform the “Kodomo Maiko” dance on the floats, enchanting the audience.
