Kariya Festival

The 'World's Great Festival' representing Kariya City
Designated as an intangible folk cultural asset of Aichi Prefecture, the 'Kariya Festival' is a shrine festival held at Akihasha in Ginzai, Kariya City, celebrating the harvest and praying for fire disaster prevention and safety of the town. Young men carry a 'Mando', a paper mache doll made of bamboo and washi paper, about 5m tall, 3m wide, and weighing about 60kg, and dance to the music of flutes and drums. Food stalls, essential for summer festivals, also set up, attracting more than 70,000 spectators over the two days each year. ■Notes Inquiries can also be made at the Kariya Station Tourist Information Center (0566-45-5833) (excluding the second Wednesday of each month).
