Kyoto Arashiyama Mifune Festival

The harmony of fresh green and the vermilion of the boats creates a wonderful picture of peace.
This festival was started in 1928 to commemorate the Showa Great Exhibition as an extension ritual for the annual festival. Multiple boats are floated on the Oigawa River in Arashiyama, recreating the boat play from the Heian period when the deity, Lord Kiyohara no Taira, flourished. The dragon-head boat, the geese-head boat, and the companion boats dedicated to Gagaku and Bugaku beautifully contrast with the fresh green of the Oigawa River in May. There will be no procession from Kuramae Shrine or Togetsukyo Bridge, tea ceremony, or service as 'Sei Shonagon'. To prevent congestion, specific locations will remain undisclosed.
