30th Old Tone River Lantern Festival

30th Old Tone River Lantern Festival

The Milky Way on Earth

Sugito Town Along the Old Tone River

8/2(Sat)

8/3(Sun)

The Old Tone River Lantern Festival is a summer tradition held every August in Sugito Town. Each large lantern is about the size of a tatami mat. The sight of around 250 large lanterns, which are some of the largest in Japan, filling the surface of the river is like seeing the Milky Way come down to earth. All lanterns are handmade by the town's residents without the use of nails through the techniques of assembly. The Old Tone River Lantern Festival has been selected as one of the '100 Scenic Heritage of Japan to Preserve in the 21st Century,' attracting many tourists to this event. ■ Notes No fireworks or floating lanterns will be held. An event allows you to view the lanterns while riding on a pleasure boat.
