During the Edo period, the port town of Shimonoseki (Akama Seki) achieved great prosperity. Many shipping routes intersected at the Shimonoseki Strait (Kanmon Strait), gathering logistics from all over the country. Akama Seki was also a stage for political activities and cultural exchanges, and it is known that many patriots interacted with the merchants of Akama Seki during the end of the Edo period. This exhibition introduces the state of Akama Seki, which prospered to be called the 'largest port in the Western region,' and the appearance of the merchants who thrived on that stage.
