Arashiyama Lantern Floating

Sending off ancestors with gentle light
The Arashiyama Lantern Floating event began in 1949 as a way to comfort the spirits of the war dead by offering lanterns. During the Obon festival, there is a custom to welcome ancestors and devote rituals to them, and once the Obon ends, they are sent off to the Pure Land. This lantern floating event is also one of the sending-off rituals. The spirits of our ancestors ride the floating lanterns back to the Pure Land. On the day of the event, you can see the large character and torii-shaped sending fire from the vicinity of the venue. Why not immerse yourself in the ethereal world along with the once-a-year lantern floating?
