The Sumiyoshi Matsuri, which concludes Osaka's last summer festival, carries the significance of purification throughout Osaka, and has been referred to as "oharai" since ancient times. It begins with the Mikoshi washing ceremony on Marine Day, followed by the Mikoshi procession to Sakai on July 27, the "Evening festival" on July 30, the "Summer purification ceremony (Selected intangible folk cultural asset of Osaka Prefecture) & Grand festival" on the 31st, and then the "Tonin Matsuri & funanori purification ceremony (designated intangible folk cultural asset of Sakai City)" held at the Tonin shrine in Sakai on August 1. ■Notes There will be no street stalls during the Sumiyoshi Matsuri period.
