Matsudaira Shungaku, the 16th lord of Fukui Domain, faced the turbulence of the late Edo period head-on as one of the 'Four Wise Lords of the Late Edo.' Katsu Kaishu envisioned the construction of a large navy that transcended the boundaries of the shogunate and various domains during the Bunkyū period reform of the shogunate and gained strong trust from Shungaku, who was leading the reforms as the Chief of Politics at the time. This exhibition introduces the efforts and exchanges between Matsudaira Shungaku and Katsu Kaishu, who entrusted the future of Japan to the sea, through letters, paintings, and drawings remaining in Fukui.
