"Onoji Seven Buddha Pilgrimage" temple
Founded by the Bodhisattva Gyouki during the Tenpyou period (729-749), it is the head temple of the Shingon Daigo sect. The Nio gate, which serves as the mountain gate, houses two Nio statues created in the late Muromachi period. In homage to their strong legs, giant sandals over 2 meters in size have been dedicated. Festivals heralding the arrival of the new year, such as the Shabutsu Goma and Setsubun celebrations, attract many visitors, especially during the cherry blossom season when the grounds come alive with people. When viewed from the temple grounds during cherry blossom blooming, a scenery unfolds where the townscape seems to spread above a cloud of cherry blossoms.
