Kawauchi Ooi Hiki

A 'passionate!' traditional event that has continued for over 420 years
The 'Kawauchi Ooi Hiki' is a traditional event that has continued for over 420 years and is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of the country. About 1,500 citizens unite to prepare a large rope that is 365 meters long and weighs about 7 tons, and during the Ooi Hiki, about 3,000 men, known as 'Hadaka', who are bare-chested with a 'sarashi' wrapped around them, pull on the large rope against each other. In the central area, you can see the fierce clashes between the pushing teams from both sides as they attempt to interfere with the enemy's pulling team and protect their own.
